Learn oil painting with the underpainting/glazing technique used by old masters such as Leonardo da Vinci. This class covers the basics of oil painting and is for complete beginners as well as those who already have painting experience. Previous students will continue learning with different assignments. We will use photos as reference for paintings in this class. The class will also cover elements of basic design and composition, as well as photographing and framing your work. No previous art experience is required.
Course Objectives
The objective of this class is to give a foundational understanding of oil painting technique. Students who are taking this class for the first time will be creating a painting from a photo. Emphasis will be placed on accurately gauging value (light/dark) and using areas of value rather than line to create shape and realistic imagery, and on separating shape and value from color as different stages of the painting process. Students who have taken the class before will have different assignments and focus on accuracy, detail, technique, and other aspects of painting on an individual basis according to each student's needs.
